The First Hours Decide It: Bulkoid Data on When TikTok Engagement Matters Most

New research covering more than 25,000 TikTok scenarios suggests that the first hours after posting offer the strongest opportunity for FYP visibility, with the estimated advantage declining after 48 hours.

Bulkoid, a social media growth platform, has published new research highlighting the importance of early engagement in determining a TikTok video’s potential to reach the For You Page (FYP).

The Bulkoid TikTok FYP study examined more than 25,000 account-level scenarios, comparing engagement levels, follower counts and the timing of interactions. The findings suggest that videos receiving strong engagement shortly after publication can achieve up to 5.1 times higher estimated FYP likelihood compared with videos starting with minimal activity.

However, that advantage becomes noticeably smaller as engagement arrives later. Videos receiving interactions more than 48 hours after publication showed an estimated FYP likelihood of just 1.7 times the baseline.

Early Engagement Shows the Strongest Results

The timing analysis revealed a clear decline in estimated discovery potential as the time between publication and engagement increased.

Engagement Timing Relative FYP Likelihood
Early launch window 5.1x
Later the same day 4.2x
24-48 hours after posting 2.9x
More than 48 hours after posting 1.7x

According to Bulkoid’s findings, the earliest engagement window produced approximately three times the estimated FYP discovery potential associated with interactions arriving after 48 hours.

The results also suggest that engagement involving multiple types of interaction may be more valuable than views alone. Videos combining strong early views, likes and comments showed the highest estimated FYP likelihood in the study.

Although older videos can still gain traction, the research indicates that the initial period following publication may offer a particularly valuable opportunity for creators looking to build momentum.

What the Findings Mean for TikTok Creators

The research adds a new perspective to discussions about the best times to post on TikTok.

Rather than identifying a specific hour or day that guarantees stronger performance, Bulkoid’s analysis focuses on how quickly engagement develops after a video goes live.

For creators, influencers and businesses, this suggests that publishing when their audience is active could help encourage earlier interactions. Monitoring initial performance, responding to comments and creating content that encourages viewers to engage may also help build momentum.

However, timing alone does not determine whether a video reaches a wider audience. TikTok’s recommendation system considers several factors, including watch time, viewer interests and content relevance.

Bulkoid also notes that its findings are based on an internal analytical model rather than official TikTok algorithm data. The figures represent estimated relative FYP likelihood, not guaranteed increases in views or viral success.

Still, the difference between 5.1x during the early launch window and 1.7x after 48 hours highlights why creators may benefit from treating the first hours after publication as an important part of their content strategy.
